Independent department store has record Christmas!

27 December 2019

The award-winning independent department store Sandersons, based at Fox Valley in north Sheffield has reported record breaking figures for Christmas trade.

In 2019 Sandersons won the Drapers Best New Independent Retailer Award for its unique format and creating a real experience for shoppers. The store’s new Spa was also launched by Joanna Lumley OBE in September this year and has been a growing success, also driving strong Christmas gifting sales.

Sandersons has now reported its strongest Christmas sales since the store was launched in 2016. The last full week of Christmas shopping (w/c 16th December) saw record breaking figures with a 19.4% increase in like for like sales against the same week in 2018.

Boxing Day sales were also strong, showing a small increase on 2018 figures, even though the store opened at the later time of 10am after opening at 6am for previous Boxing Day sales - shoppers were also offered a complimentary glass of prosecco.

And the last two days of Christmas shopping – December 23rd and December 24th showed a 37% and 23% increase in sales respectively with the full sale not starting until Boxing Day on December 26th.

In December the store has traded 32% up compared to December 2018. There has also been a 27% growth in online sales across the month.

Sandersons was founded by Yorkshire businesswoman Deborah Holmes, who sadly passed away in January 2019. Deborah’s husband, Mark Dransfield, owner of the leading South Yorkshire property company Dransfield Properties, now heads up the business. The company also owns Fox Valley where Sandersons is based.

The store stocks brands including Barbour, Barbour International, Part Two, Guide London, Tommy Hilfiger and Hobbs. New brands to join the line-up this year include the luxury Parisian coat company Ventcouvert.

Mark said: “We have had a really strong Christmas trading period which is testament to the hard work of the whole team as well as the great mix of brands we have now. We are attracting new shoppers from a wider catchment.

“Sell through has been the best since the store opened in September 2016. Sandersons is Deborah’s legacy and we really have worked hard this year to build on the store’s success and take it to the next level.”

Fox Valley has also had a strong Christmas. Though visitor numbers were down on Boxing Day the centre recorded its strongest figures for both December 23rd and 24th.
