Steel Gravel Tour Celebrating Tour de Yorkshire Coming to Stocksbridge

24 February 2017

The Steel Gravel Tour is a cycling event celebrating the Tour de Yorkshire coming to Stocksbridge, as well as the fantastic countryside and paths in the surrounding area.

The event is due to take place on Saturday 22nd April, the week before the Tour de Yorkshire finishes in Fox Valley, Stocksbridge.

Entries to the event are due to open on 1st March at www.steelgraveltour.wordpress.com and places are limited so you are advised to enter early to secure your place.

The 70 km or 44 mile route will be made up of gravel tracks and scenic country lanes and is designed to be ridden on any bike you like, from a road bike to a mountain bike, although a gravel, cyclocross, xc mountain bike or hybrid type bike will be the best option for the mix of terrain on route. The route uses parts of the ‘Stocksbridge loop’ section of the Tour de Yorkshire, including 3 of the 4 categorised climbs the professionals will be tackling.

There will be a fancy dress competition, which is optional but encouraged, with a yellow, blue and white theme and prizes provided by Cotic bikes for the best dressed. The competition is being judged by the Stocksbridge Mayor. There will be a woodland tea party on route, so cyclists can fuel up with a nice cup of tea or coffee, a slice of cake and show off their fancy dress costumes.

The funds raised from the event will go to the Steel Valley Project, a countryside management charity, details of which are available on their website at www.steelvalleyproject.org.

The ride will be starting and finishing at Full Gas Bikes, located in the Fox Valley development in the centre of Stocksbridge, on the outskirts of Sheffield, the same place the Tour de Yorkshire will be finishing the week after.

The event organiser, Tom Newman said: ‘This will be a fantastic adventure and challenge, with loads of fun on the way. The perfect way to get in the mood for the Tour de Yorkshire coming to town!’ The event organisers are looking for volunteers to help out on the day, contact the Steel Valley Project at info@steelvalleyproject.org or 0114 2830880 to register your interest.
