Herds of shoppers are in for a Pete McKee treat at Sandersons Department Store

16 November 2016

Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley has a special guest in the run up to Christmas – one of Sheffield’s famous elephant sculptures is taking pride of place in the stores homewards department.

The fibreglass elephant called Marjorie featured in the “Herd of Sheffield” exhibition organised to raise fund for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and was designed by the artist Pete McKee.

The design features male steel workers on one side and buffer girls on the other – paying homage to the hard working men and women of South Yorkshire’s past.

Pete McKee’s design raised a fantastic £22,000 at the Herd of Sheffield auction held at the Crucible Theatre last month and was bought by Debbie and Philip Prince.

After Christmas Marjorie will move to her permanent home at Philip's offices at the former Broadfield Dairy off London Road.

Philip said: "our offices are undergoing some work at the moment and we wanted to find a temporary home for Marjorie where people could come and visit - Sandersons which is surrounded by so many fantastic Pete McKee pieces seemed the perfect place. We hope people enjoy coming to visit her and helping us raise more money for this fantastic cause."

The famous Sheffield artist also famously designed the striking pieces of art which can be found at Fox Valley where Sandersons Boutique is located - including the Umbrella Girls and steelworkers wall mural and the Grandad Fox statue which sits at the entrance to the development.

There will be collection buckets placed with the 1.6 metre tall Marjorie figure with all proceeds going to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

The team at Sandersons are also holding a selfie competition with Marjorie where the best picture will win a voucher to spend in store.

Store manager Lisa Fox said: “We’re are all excited to have such an iconic piece of art in our store for the next few weeks and would like to see a big thank you to Debbie and Phillip Prince.

“The Herd of Sheffield has been such a fun way to raise lots of money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and we’re delighted to be a part of it and help fundraise for this fantastic charity.”
